Jack Russell Terrier
Tiny. Relentless. Currently dismantling your garden.
Jack Russell Terriers are intensely energetic, fearless, and sharp — bred to hunt and go to ground after prey, and it shows in everything they do. They're notorious diggers and escape artists, and a Jack Russell without a serious outlet will invent one, usually somewhere the owner doesn't want it.
Jack Russell Terriers typically live 13–16 years. Patellar luxation is common. Primary lens luxation, an eye condition specific to the breed, and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, a hip joint condition in small breeds, both appear at notable rates. Deafness is also documented.
A standard quality diet works well here — weight management isn't usually the challenge given how much energy this breed burns. The bigger consideration is matching caloric intake to genuinely high daily energy output rather than under- or over-feeding relative to size alone.
This breed's high energy can genuinely overwhelm younger kids, and it does best with active families or working environments like farms. They can be scrappy with other dogs, and their prey drive is a real risk to small pets in the household.
Small size fools people into thinking this is an easy first dog or a good apartment fit — it's neither. This is one of the most demanding small breeds that exists, needing serious daily physical and mental outlets, or it will find its own, usually destructive, alternative.
