Leonbergers are gentle, calm, and deeply family-oriented, generally patient and good-natured rather than reactive. They're watchful without being aggressive, and their sheer size means they need real space to be comfortable.
Leonbergers typically live 8–10 years, a short lifespan relative to their size, similar to most giant breeds. Bloat, hip and elbow dysplasia, bone cancer, and heart issues are all documented risks. Leonberger polyneuropathy, a breed-specific neurological condition, has also been identified.
Large-breed puppy formula matters critically during growth given the size this breed needs to reach safely. Bloat precautions and ongoing joint support are worth building into the routine throughout the dog's life given its size and weight.
Leonbergers are excellent with kids, patient and calm by nature. They need significant space and aren't suited to apartment living, but generally integrate well with other pets given proper introduction.
This is a gentle giant in the truest sense, but the size comes with the same tradeoffs seen across giant breeds — a shorter lifespan, real ongoing vet costs, and a genuine need for space that no amount of exercise can substitute for.
